Standards*: B.4.1: Create or produce writing to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
B.4.2: Plan, revise, edit, and publish clear effective writing.
Objective: Students will be able to use the 5 Step Writing Process to produce an informational essay.
Materials: Data from the various graphs in Sad Stats Part 1, reviewing of videos and collected pictures, and writing templates or graphic organizers.
Activity: Using the 5 Step Writing Process, do the prewriting activity as a group. Write a 5 paragraph (minimum), informational essay about motorcycle, bicycle, or other sport crash and the injuries or death that could be prevented through the practicing proper helmet safety.
Assessment: Students will be evaluated on a 4-point writing rubric with a score of a “3” or “4” being considered proficient. Particular emphasis will be put on the use of author’s voice in the essay.
