A Poly Good Time

Standard: D.4.1*: Understanding that objects are made of more than one substance, by observing, describing, and measuring the properties of earth materials, including properties of size, weight, shape, color, temperature, and the ability to react with other substances.

Objective: Students will learn how to create a polymer using everyday household materials.

Materials:

  • White Glue
  • Borax
  • Water
  • Paper Cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Small Plastic Bags

Activity: Let’s Make a Polymer:

  • Measure equal amounts of glue, water, and borax.
  • Pour all ingredients into a paper cup.
  • Add small amounts of water and mix until desired consistence (stiff, yet tacky).
  • Put newly created “polymers” into plastic bags for students to take home.

Assessment: Discuss the chemical reaction that has taken place. Students are to discuss and record how the polymer has qualities of both a solid and a liquid.
